Double your Fun - Open Regatta - July 26-27, 2008

hosted by Wolf Lake Yacht Club, near Jackson, Michigan

The annual “Double your Fun” open regatta was held on July 26-27, 2008 at the Wolf Lake Yacht Club near Jackson, Michigan. Two fleets went on the water to race, completing six races over the two day event. The Snipe fleet had ten boats competing and the Sunfish had nine boats. A ¾ mile windward-leeward course, with an offset at the windward mark, was set for both days. It looks like the dog days of summer have yet to arrive in south central Michigan, as we had moderate to strong westerly winds both days. The Saturday races began at 1:00pm in moderate 10-15mph winds which kept building throughout the afternoon to the 17-20mph in the fourth race with gusts of 25mph. Two races were completed Sunday morning in much more comfortable west winds of 10-15mph. With the heavy air on Saturday, several more sailors joined the Wolf Lake swimming club when the unmanageable winds caused three Snipes and one Sunfish to capsize. Everyone was OK, but unfortunately one Snipe lost their centerboard in the rough waters, adding it to the collection at the bottom of Wolf Lake, while another snipe had a bent mast.

In the Snipe fleet, John Crookston and crew took a one in three races to lead in points both days and win the class for the regatta. Second place for the Snipes was very close for three crews. At the end of day one, Joe Baublis/Kate Heywood and John McAllister/Tracey Hughes were tied for second with eleven points, with Joe and Kate getting a one in race four. John and Tracey had a consistent first day taking a two in races one and four. Although Dave and Cyndi Daniels got a one in the third race they had amassed a total of fifteen points after the first day. The more moderate winds on Sunday allowed for more mixed results within the entire fleet with Dave and Cyndi taking a one in race five and a three for the last race, which gave them second place for the regatta, with Joe and Kate taking third. The strong races of Matt Heywood/Chris Bickley and Andy Nixon and crew, indicated how closely matched this fleet was.

In the Sunfish fleet, Dan Norton had a great weekend, taking bullets in all six races to win the regatta in the class. Second place was a back and forth for both Rob Stephenson and Josh Kerst. Josh took advantage of the stronger winds on Saturday, to take the two spot in three races, giving him a two point lead over Rob at the end of day. On Sunday the roles were reversed and Rob was able to make the most of the moderate winds by getting twos in both races. Both Rob and Josh had fifteen points, creating a statistical tie. It becomes interesting because they both have the same number of 2 nd and 3 rd place finishes. Second place for the regatta was decided by using a second tiebreaker rule of “who had the better score for the final race”. Since Rob got a two and Josh a three, Rob wins second place in the regatta, followed by Josh in third. While Dan, Rob and Josh were battling out the top three places, Bruce Lowstuter, Ryan Mabie and John Fenton were sparring for the next three places in competitive racing. After the wind and spray settled, Bruce took fourth place and Ryan fifth for the regatta class.

Many thanks to everyone who volunteered their time to make this regatta a success. It was a well organized, enjoyable event. The race committee set a great course and kept the races moving and safe on the water. The clubhouse kitchen crew kept everyone well feed with wonderful home cooked meals on both days. And of course, a thank you goes to all the sailors who traveled great distances, some as far as Ontario, Ohio, western Michigan and those of us who were only a few miles from home.

Regatta photos, taken by Kathy Ziegler, are available in the WLYC website's photo section: http://www.wolflakeyachtclub.org
