USSCA - Midwest Regional #1 - June 28-29, 2008

The US Sunfish Class Association held the "Midwest Regional I" on June 28-29, 2008 at the Wolf Lake Yacht Club near Jackson, Michigan. Fourteen sailors competed in the weekend regatta, completing six races over the two day event. A windward-leeward course was set for the blustery west-southwest winds with an offset at the windward mark for both days. There were 17 mph winds with gusts to 30 mph on Saturday and whitecaps throughout the day, making for challenging moments for some and exciting challenges for others, but four races were completed. Two races were completed the following morning between rain showers with steady winds, slightly less than the day before and much more manageable for the entire fleet.
On Saturday, after the wind and spray settled, Derrick Fries held a commanding lead by placing first in all four races. Dan Norton was right there with Derrick throughout the day Saturday coming in second in each race. Third place for the Saturday races where a battle between Chad Coberly and Scott Schappe who both picked up 3's in two of the races with Josh Kerst coming in close behind taking two 4's.
The results were a little more mixed on Sunday morning which brought light rain before the races and lighter 13 mph winds. In the two completed races, Derrick took a one for the first race and a two for the second, with Chad coming on strong to take a one for that second race. Dan placed a two in the first race. The lighter winds proved favorable for Rob Stephenson who placed third in both Sunday races.
The overall results for the regatta gave trophies to the top five sailors: 1st - Derrick Fries, 2nd - Dan Norton, 3rd - Chad Coberly, 4th - Scott Schappe, 5th - Josh Kerst. The table below lists the complete results.
A heartfeltl thanks to everyone who volunteered their time to make this regatta a success and helped it run so smoothly. It was a well organized event. The race committee set a great course and kept events moving along and safe on the water. The clubhouse kitchen crew kept everyone well feed with wonderful home cooked meals both days. And of course, a thank you goes to all the sailors who traveled great distances, some as far as New York, Illinios, Ohio and Northern Michigan and those of us who were only a few miles from home. We all worked well together to help get the boats and gear up and down the "hill". This was an awesome fleet that provided a great competition.
